Théot, Catherine

Théot, Catherine
(ca. 1725-1794)
   visionary
Born in Barenton, Manche, Catherine Théot, who suffered since adolescence from hallucinations, believed herself to be chosen by God to be the mother of a new messiah. As a consequence, she was placed in a convent until 1782 and then was confined until the beginning of the revolution of 1789. When maximilien Robespierre in May 1794 instituted the Cult of the Supreme Being, Théot declared that he was the precursor of the Divine Word. The subsequent "affair of Catherine Théot" was denounced in the National Assembly and, despite Robespierre's protection, she was interned in the Conciergerie, where she soon died. This affair, which exposed Robespierre and the Cult of the Supreme Being to ridicule, contributed to his downfall.
